The project VAROFOMO (Vacuum Assisted Rotational Foam Molding) focused on a novel method for producing polymeric foams through rotational molding. This innovative technique eliminates the need for chemical blowing agents by using air inclusions in the polymer melt as an intrinsic, physical blowing agent. By applying a vacuum, the air bubbles expand and create the foam’s cellular structure upon solidification. The process offers numerous benefits, including waste-free and sustainable production in a one-shot, one-material approach, as well as optimal recyclability of the foams.

The project was conducted in collaboration with the partners adidas AG, E. Braun GmbH, Werkzeugbau Siegfried Hofmann, Fill GmbH, and RICONE GmbH. We would like to thank all participants for their invalu-able contributions and efforts towards the success of this groundbreaking initiative.
